Royal Mail starts DRONE delivery trial with unmanned craft capable of carrying 100kg of parcels tested on route between remote Scottish islands

Drones are being used to deliver post to a remote Scottish island as part of a Royal Mail trial to reduce carbon emissions.

The company has started a two-week test of scheduled, autonomous flights between Kirkwall and North Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands in conjunction with Windracers Ltd.

As well as reducing carbon emissions, it is hoped the trial will help better connect remote island communities.

The post is being carried by a large, twin-engine, UK-built unmanned aerial vehicle named Ultra which can transport 100kg of post of all shapes and sizes - equivalent to a typical delivery round.

Letters and parcels will be delivered by the local postie in the usual way when they reach the island, which is further north than the southern tip of Norway and is home to around 70 people.

The trial is part of the Sustainable Aviation Test Environment project based at Kirkwall Airport.

'We care about delivering a brilliant service for all of our customers, wherever they live in the UK. We are also incredibly passionate about protecting our diverse and beautiful environments.

'This trial is designed to help with both of these goals, using the most innovative technologies to support the remote and isolated communities we serve in the greenest way possible, Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail, said.

If the trial is successful, the technology will be considered by Royal Mail to support postmen and postwomen in delivering to very remote areas and addresses across the UK.

UAVs can fly in poor weather conditions, including fog, because they are uncrewed, and unlike boat services they are not affected by tides.

'North Ronaldsay is a very remote area of the UK and I'm proud to be involved in an initiative that will help Royal Mail to do all we can to keep all areas of the UK connected,' local North Ronaldsay postwoman Sarah Moore said.

Charles Scales, chief executive officer at Windracers, said the firm is 'delighted' to be operating one of its Ultra UAVs to North Ronaldsay for Royal Mail.

'Our autonomous system will deliver an all-weather service for the community and significantly lower carbon emissions.'

This is the third drone trial that Royal Mail has taken part in over the last year.

In December 2020, Royal Mail delivered a parcel via drone to a remote lighthouse on the Isle of Mull, which it said was a first for a nationwide UK parcel carrier.

In May 2021 it trialled an out of sight drone parcel delivery with Windracers Ltd, and the first inter-island deliveries on the Isles of Scilly which it also described as UK firsts.

The trial between Kirkwall and North Ronaldsay began on Monday and runs until Friday October 15, with flights taking place on weekdays.

The Sate project is funded by UK Research and Innovation via the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

Dougie Cook, Highland and Islands Airports Limited general manager north, said: 'This is a significant trial for UAVs that form an important part of the Sate project.

'The facilities at Kirkwall Airport provide an ideal testing centre for this innovative application of UAV technology, which could bring practical benefits to the communities that HIAL serves.'

Hiring the right people starts with having the right recruiting model in place.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a model?  Having the right look is inherited genetically, and is definitely a big factor in having a successful career. However, the other part of modeling and arguably the most important, is knowing how market a product in a way that pleases both clients and photographers. Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Iman, Gigi Hadid. These are the names of just a few famous models that have graced beauty magazine covers and strutted down catwalks. The job description of a model varies by the type of modeling job you are hired for. However, all models must keep an up-to-date portfolio of their work to include photos of themselves via composite cards. This is necessary as potential clients or modeling agencies may sift through portfolios and composite cards before inviting a model to audition. The composite card would also include their body measurements. Some models specialize in showcasing one of their body parts, such as a hand or foot. There are also fit...

The Texas abortion ban sends mixed signals about the future of Roe v. Wade.

Legal experts say it is still unclear how the Supreme Court will rule on long-standing abortion guarantees, which it plans to review later this year. Despite uproar from activist organizations that see the move as a de facto departure from the 1973 ruling, the Supreme Court's failure to act on Texas's near-total abortion ban does not necessarily mean Roe v. Wade is dead. Legal experts say it is unclear how the Supreme Court will rule on long-standing guarantees for abortion, which it plans to review later this year when it hears a direct appeal against this important ruling. Texas' first-of-its-kind law allows individuals, not the government, to impose a six-week ban on abortion and file lawsuits against health professionals or anyone who helps someone get an abortion. Clinics and other potential claimants will find it more difficult to establish their position in court or to determine a specific target for satisfying claims due to the unusual enforcement mechanism. Vice President Kamala Harris's visit to Vietnam has been postponed due to a probable case of Havana Syndrome.

WASHINGTON, DC - Vice President Kamala Harris' trip to Vietnam was postponed Tuesday after her office received reports of a probable case of Havana Syndrome, a strange illness that has plagued U.S. diplomats around the world. The State Department said Harris's office was made aware of a "recent potential health incident" in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, referring to what the US government previously called Havana Syndrome, a series of unexplained health incidents first reported in 2016. U.S. Embassy diplomats and staff in Cuba. "The decision to continue the vice president's trip was taken after careful consideration," the statement said, but without any details. According to NBC News, at least two US ambassadors will be medically evacuated from the country after "abnormal acoustic events" occurred over the weekend.
