United Kingdom -- After workers at the delivery center spot a giant African snail, animal rescuers in the UK are trying to figure out where the box should have been, ahem, the snail.
On August 5, workers in Hinckley, Leicestershire, about 90 miles northwest of London, found a box with no return or shipping address. There was no packaging on the box. There was only one snail inside.
Workers contacted Inspector Richard Durant of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to deal with the snail.
“Fortunately, the snail was in good health and could be sent immediately to an exotic center for specialist care,” Durant said in a statement.
According to the RSPCA, giant African land snails can grow up to 7.8 inches long, weigh 32 grams and live up to ten years. Durant claimed that the snail found in the bag was about 4 to 5 inches long and the shell was about the size of a large lemon.
Snails are considered invasive in the United States because they feed on hundreds of different plant species, according to the National Invasive Species Information Center, and are also kept as pets around the world, but Durant was surprised anyway. find one at the distribution center.
“We don't see them very often, so it's unusual to see one in such an unusual place. We have no idea if this snail was dumped or if someone was trying to post the poor creature, ”he said.
"As with any pet, it is very important that anyone who wants to own a huge snail understands that they need to be groomed before they can bring it home."
